The year was 2008, and the kids of a small elementary school in Plendore were running and playing in the school’s playground. They giggled in delight as they run down the slides and jump from the jungle gym, enjoying the nice day outside. A group of little boys, dash past each other in a game of tag, as 11 year old Mika Alexander grinned at his fellow classmates. They try and catch their buddies by the collars of their shirts, laughing while they try and take a breath. And they spot whoever is the slowest and catch them like lions catching their prey. But Mika had already made a name for himself as the fastest in his grade. No matter how fast any of the boys would run to try and finally snag the famous Mika the roadrunner, they just couldn’t match his almost unearthly speed.
Mika turned his yellow and red hat to the front, as he bent down behind the slide, playing scout. He checks left and right, making sure he wasn’t going to just blindly run out in the open and get caught.

Mika had come up with a strategy this time around. He had decided to hide in the jungle gym, ducking from view as his friends would scan the playground for any remaining runners. He thought he could outsmart them this time, maybe even beat Jason Miller at his own game. When his friends’ backs were turned, Mika dashes to a new location, careful not to make too much noise. As soon as he reaches the top of the jungle gym, he takes a satisfying sigh of relief. Beat that suckers, Mika E. Alexander has won again!
But his victory was sort lived as he suddenly heard a strange noise coming from the plastic tube behind him. Mika ignored it for a moment, but the sounds continue, and Mika finds sudden interest in seeing what that noise was. He looked back, making sure he wouldn’t get jumped from behind by his friends, and bent down to see inside the tube.
At first, the inside was extremely dark, but as Mika’s eyes adjusted, he could see a person on the other end. It’s a girl. Dressed in a white and orange shirt, jeans, and pink ballerina shoes, she hugs her legs as she cries softly; her long light brown hair in a ponytail drooped down her shoulder.
Mika tilted his head in confusion. His inner monologue debated what he should do next. She obviously was upset, but girls are always upset about something, he thought. (he obviously didn’t know much about girls, especially since he was only 11 and he was still in the ‘girls have cooties’ phase).
He probably should just leave her be. For whatever reason she was crying for, she could sort it out on her own. She didn’t need some nosey boy coming in asking what’s she’s bothered about…

But…

Mika leaned into the tube, peering into the dark. He whispered,
“uh..hi.”
The girl’s head shot up, a shocked expression on her face. Fear overcame her senses as she huddled closer to the tube’s other end. “Don’t come near me! Please…”
Mika crouched down and put his hands up defensively. “whoa, just, calm down, okay?”
The girl continued to stare at Mika, her eyes full of distrust. She kept her hands behind her back, obviously hiding something as she fearfully kept her distance.
“I’m not gonna hurt ya, I just wanted…to see why you were crying.”
She looked  behind her back then back to the boy; wiping her runny nose with the back of her hand.
“why do you wanna know? You don’t know me.”
Mika shrugged nonchalantly. “Just curious.”

She furrowed her brow “oh sure. Are you gonna make fun of me? like all the other kids do? I hear what they say about me behind my back.”
Mika frowned “no, I just wanted to know if you’re okay.”
The girl’s expression changed from angered and untrusting, to mildly annoyed “don’t play dumb.”
“I’m not...you know what? Fine, you don’t want to tell me, I’m out of here.” Mika said; upset as he starts to stand.
“Wait!” the girl almost cried out. She raised her hand, signaling Mika to stop.
Mika paused, and then looked back into the tube.
The girl took a breath “come in closer, please?”
Mika got a bit nervous; secretly thinking this girl would give him a cooty-filled kiss or something. He dreaded for that moment, and he probably would dread it for as long as he lived. But he swallowed his fear and bravely entered into the tube, crawling his way toward the girl.

She frowned at him as he entered, clutching to what was behind her back. A stray yellowish brown hair went over her eyes, as she brushed it to the side. One day, she’ll cut those stupid bangs off, and maybe change her hair color. Probably bright pink.
Mika then reached the middle of the tube; a good couple of feet away from the secretive girl. She looked at him sadly “do you promise, you won’t tell anyone about what I’m about to show you?”
Mika nodded, not really meaning it. He’d probably tell his friends later.
She could see right through him. “No, promise me. You won’t ever tell a soul. Promise me!”
Mika cried “all right, all right! I promise, see?” he did a cross over his heart and raised his hand. Scout’s honor.
The girl sighed. “Don’t freak out, okay?”
Mika nodded, prepared for whatever he may see.

The girl leaned back, as two white shapes grew from her backside. They were small, but quite long; both of them covered in feathers. Mika suddenly realized those were wings, as he back up a few inches. He tried to look brave, when internally, he was screaming like a girl.
She cried a bit as she looked at her wings. Tears rushed down her cheeks as she clung to her legs again.
Mika watched her cry for a moment or two, still recooperating from seeing little dove wings grow out from the girl’s back. He waited, then inched in a few meters, cautiously putting his hand out, and put it on her shoulder.

The girl looked up; water flooding her eyes as she looked at Mika. She took a wheezing breath. “You…you’re not afraid of me?”
Mika shook his head.
“But…why not? Aren’t you scared of these things? Or me?”
Mika shook his head again. “I’m not afraid. Of those or you.”
The girl squinted her eyes in concern. Looking over at Mika’s hand on her shoulder, she took a relaxed sigh “really?”
Mika smiled slightly “yeah. Really.”
The girl returned a smile, wiping her nose once more. “thank you.”
Mika shrugged “no problem.” He crossed his legs as he sat in the tube. “I’m Mika, by the way.” He extended his hand out to her.
She looked down at his outreached hand, then gently shook it “Enid.”
“Enid, huh? That’s a weird name.” Mika replied.
“So’s Mika.” Enid retorted.
Mika raised an eyebrow.
Enid giggled. “Sorry.”
Mika smirked “it’s cool.”
